Virtualization solutions
Virtual machines, virtual desktops and server consolidation, so more workloads run on fewer physical machines with faster recovery when something fails.
Fewer machines
Consolidate ageing servers onto current hardware with a support contract.
Faster recovery
Restore a virtual machine from a recent snapshot instead of rebuilding a server.
Room to grow
Capacity planned for the workload you expect in three years, not today.
Virtualisation is not new, and that is part of its value. Running several workloads on one well specified host cuts power, rack space and hardware refresh cost, and it makes recovery a matter of minutes rather than days.
The work is in sizing the hosts correctly and knowing what should not be virtualised. A database with an unusual input and output profile, or a machine attached to specialist hardware, may be better left alone.
What we do
- Server consolidation, replacing several physical servers with one or two hosts
- New virtualisation platforms, either commercial or open source
- Virtual desktops, where a managed image is easier to secure or replace than individual machines
- Storage attached to the hosts, with the redundancy the workload needs
- Host and virtual machine backup, including replication to a second site or the cloud
- Migration of existing workloads with a rollback position for each one
Sizing a platform
An undersized host is worse than no virtualisation at all, because every workload suffers together. We measure the current environment rather than relying on the specification sheet of the old servers, and we leave headroom for a host failure.
- Processor cores and memory measured against real utilisation, not peak anecdotes
- Storage sized for capacity, throughput and the growth you expect
- Networking and redundancy checked so a single failed link does not take the estate down
- Licensing confirmed for the virtualisation platform and for the guest operating systems
Where it fits with the cloud
Virtualisation and cloud are not opposites. Many organisations run the workloads that suit an on premises host locally and the rest in the cloud, with the same backup and identity tools covering both. We design for that mix rather than treating it as an interim stage.
